1956-1960
- While at Buffalo State, James Hughes competed for Cross Country and Indoor and Outdoor Track for all four years and served as captain for all three teams.
- He was the fifth man when Buffalo State won the 1956 Cross Country Championships as well as winning the National Junior Cross Country Championships in 1956.
- James also earned All-Conference status in his sophomore season.
- During his career at Buffalo State James Hughes set a pair of school records with the track team in the 880-yard run and in the mile.
