BUFFALO—Dom Sair (Huntington/Huntington) had 17 carries for 64 yards and scored four touchdowns to lead Cortland (3-1/3-1) to a 42-13 victory over host Buffalo State (1-3/1-2) in an NJAC contest today at Coyer Field.

Cortland's defense allowed just 150 yards of total offense that included 68 yards resulting from a broken play on an attempted punt by the Bengals.

Quarterback Hudson Woodward (Beacon/Beacon) managed the game for Cortland, going 9 of 16 for 122 yards with an interception. Bobby Somerville (E. Greenbush/Columbia) anchored the Red Dragons defense with nine tackles, a sack and a touchdown. DJ Romano (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Acad.) added seven tackles and an interception.

Kenny Murphy (Lancaster/Lancaster) was 14 of 27 for 117 yards and an interception. Matt Pacana (N. Tonawanda/N. Tonawanda) led the defense with 16 tackles. Freshman Eddie Weiser (Grand Island/Grand Island) had nine stops, a forced fumble and an interception, and Jermaine Rose (Niagara Falls/Niagara Falls) had eight tackles, a sack and three fumble recoveries.

Cortland opened the scoring with 22 seconds remaining in the first quarter, capping a 12-play 80-yard drive with a 3-yard scoring plunge by Sair.

The Red Dragons pushed the lead to 14-0 just three plays later when Somerville forced a Murphy fumble on a handoff attempt and recovered and rumbled 9 yards for the touchdown. Cortland added the next score with 2:08 remaining in the opening half on Sair's second rushing touchdown of the day, this time from 1 yard.

Buffalo State broke the shutout with just 22 seconds remaining in the half, when punter Oraine Allen (Niagara Falls/Niagara Falls) scrambled and hurdled tacklers for a 68-yard touchdown on the Bengals' third botched punt attempt of the half, cutting the intermission deficit to 21-7.

Cortland scored first in the second half on Sair's third touchdown of the day, again from 1 yard out. Buffalo State capitalized on Rose's third fumble recovery, taking over deep in Red Dragon territory later in the third quarter. Willie Hordge (Buffalo/Forrestbrook (TX)) found the end zone from 2 yards out, making the score 28-13.

Following a 40-plus minute delay due to a passing lightning storm, Cortland pulled away with the only two scores of the fourth quarter. Sair found the end zone for the fourth time of the day with a 4-yard run, and Anthony Giuliano (Thornwood/Weslake) scored on a 15-yard run out of the “wildcat” formation.

Buffalo State will visit Kean University and Cortland will play at Montclair State. Both games will kickoff at 1 p.m.
