BUFFALO, NY—Nazareth and host Buffalo State each earned victories in the opening round of the Coles Classic tonight at the Sports Arena. Nazareth (1-1) blasted Marietta (1-1), 95-67, in the opener, and Buffalo State (1-0) pulled away from Pitt-Bradford (1-2) for an 81-69 win in the nightcap.
Nazareth raced out to a 54-23 lead at halftime of the first game and cruised to the 28-point win. Five Golden Flyers scored in double digits, led by Jason Corletta's (Pittsford/Pittsford-Sutherland) 21 points. Corey McAdam (Fairport/Fairport) had 19 points and seven assists, and Dan Waldbillig (Pittsford/Pittsford-Sutherland) tallied 14 points and 10 rebounds. Phil Scaffidi (Buffalo/St. Joe's) chipped in 15 points, and Tyshun Stephens (Newark/Newark) netted 13. Kevin Knab (Lakewood, OH/Lakewood) led Marietta with 17 points and six rebounds, and Conner Kilpatrick (Bowling Green, OH/Bowling Green) added 13 points.
Pitt-Bradford took its first lead of the game early in the second half, but the Bengals reclaimed the lead for good with 8:30 remaining and used a late 14-0 run to pull away. Freshman Jake Simmons (Rochester/School of the Arts) led the Bengals with 27 points in his debut. Norman Simmons (Rochester/East) added 18 points and eight rebounds, and #T.O. Jackson# (Bronx/Bronx Regional) had 12 points and 10 boards. Ant Hamer (Brooklyn/Bishop Loughlin) chipped in eight points and seven assists in his first game as a Bengal. Dan Heisey (Rexville/Whitesville) paced Pitt-Bradford with 21 points, and Luke Haskell (Arcade/Pioneer) had nine.
Nazareth will meet Buffalo State in tomorrow's championship game at 7 p.m. Marietta will play Pitt-Bradford in the consolation game at 5 p.m.
