BUFFALO, NY—Nazareth (2-1) took over in the second half en route to a 72-61 victory over host Buffalo State (1-1) in the title game of the men's basketball Coles Classic tonight at the Sports Arena. Marietta (2-1) defeated Pitt-Bradford (1-3), 70-54, in the consolation game.
Buffalo State led by as many as nine points in the early going and clung to a 34-33 lead at the intermission. The lead changed hands several times early in the second half, before the Golden Flyers claimed the lead for good with 6:33 remaining and used an 11-3 run to pull away. Nazareth prevailed despite shooting just 38-percent from the field, including 4 of 22 from 3-point range. Buffalo State shot 40-percent and was 0 for 8 from beyond the arc.
Corey McAdam (Fairport/Fairport) led five Nazareth starters in double figures with 18 points. Tyshun Stephens (Newark/Newark) had 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Dan Waldbillig (Pittsford/Pittsford-Sutherland) added 12 points and seven boards, Phil Scaffidi (Buffalo/St. Joe's) had 11 points and nine boards, and Jason Corletta (Pittsford/Pittsford-Sutherland) also scored 11.
Glenroy Carr (Amherst/Sweet Home) led the Bengals with 13 points.
Jake Simmons (Rochester/School of the Arts) had 12 points, and
Norman Simmons (Rochester/East) had nine points, eight rebounds and three steals.
Marietta pulled away in the second half in the consolation game and outscored the Panthers 27-9 from beyond the 3-point arc for the game. Kevin Knab (Lakewood, OH/Lakewood) led Marietta with 13 points and eight rebounds. Scott Kimmey (Olmsted Falls, OH/Olmsted Falls) also scored 13 points, and Jacob Owens (Mansfield, OH/Mansfield) added 12. Dan Heisey (Rexville/Whitesville) was the high-scorer for Bradford with 15 pints. Mike Ridge (N. Tonawanda/Starpoint) had 12 points, and Sam Moore (Olean/Olean) added 10 points and five assists.
