Fredonia Slips Past Men’s Hockey, 4-2

Shareef Labreche scored the Bengals first goal
(BOX SCORE)

BUFFALO, NY— Steve Rizer's (Smithtown, NY) shorthanded goal proved to be the game-winner as Fredonia (3-2/1-2) defeated host Buffalo State (1-3-1/1-2), 4-2, in a SUNYAC battle tonight at the Ice Arena.

Shareef Labreche (Markham/Markham District) opened the scoring with a power-play goal just 2:39 into the game for Buffalo State. Fredonia answered with a power-play tally of its own just 2:05 later by James Muscatello (Baldwinsville, NY), and then Chris Jung (Sandy, UT) gave the Blue Devils the lead late in the period just seconds after another Bengals' penalty ended.

Rizer's shorthanded goal was the only marker of the second period, pushing the Blue Devils lead to 3-1. Buffalo State pulled to within one just 1:04 into the third period on a one-timer by Nicholas Petriello (St. Catharines, ON/Holy Cross). Matt Hehr (Sherwood Park, AB) reclaimed the two-goal lead for Fredonia with a nice individual effort to complete the scoring with more than 15 minutes remaining.

Fredonia outshot the Bengals, 26-25, but Buffalo State had a 13-2 advantage in the final period. Pat Street (Annapolis, MD) had 23 stops for Fredonia, and Alan Fritch (Saginaw, MI/Heritage) made 22 saves for the Bengals. Fredonia was 1 for 7 with the man-advantage, compared to 1 of 5 for Buffalo State.

Buffalo State will visit Brockport next Friday for a 7 p.m. faceoff.
