Nicholas Petriello (St. Catharines, ON/Holy Cross) scored twice, but Geneseo (14-11-1) scored 11 minutes and 30 seconds into overtime to defeat visiting Buffalo State (10-12-4), 4-3, in a SUNYAC quarterfinal game tonight at the Ira S. Wilson Ice Arena.
After Geneseo opened the scoring midway through the first period, Buffalo State took the lead with a pair of goals before the first intermission by
Justin Merritt (Burlington, ON/Blessed Trinity) and Petriello. The Knights pulled even with the only goal of the second period, before Petriello's second goal of the game put Buffalo State ahead 3-2 with just 5:31 remaining. Geneseo pulled even again just 46 seconds later, however to force the extra period.
Geneseo outshot the Bengals, 44-37, including 8-5 in overtime.
Alan Fritch (Saginaw, MI/Heritage) made 40 saves for Buffalo State.
