Men’s Basketball Drops Double-Overtime Heartbreaker at Hobart, 99-97

GENEVA, NY— #T.O. Jackson# (Bronx/Bronx Regional) had 25 points and 17 rebounds, but it was not enough as Buffalo State (1-5) dropped a 99-97 heartbreaker in double-overtime at Hobart (6-4) tonight in a non-conference battle.

Jake Simmons (Rochester/School of the Arts) scored 21 points for the Bengals shooting 8 of 23 from the field, but just 1 of 10 from 3-point range. Justin Mitchell (Buffalo/Bishop Timon) chipped in 14 points, and Antonio Samedi (St. Albans/Queens Vocational) added 10 points, nine rebounds and five blocks.

Buffalo State led 39-31 at halftime and then 78-75 in the closing seconds of regulation. Hobart evened the score with three late free throws however, hitting one of two with 16 seconds remaining, and then knocked down two more with just eight seconds to play. The Statesmen led by as many as five points in the first overtime, but this time the Bengals rallied to knot the score at 86-86 on a layup by Simmons with 12 seconds remaining to force another period. Hobart opened the second extra session with a 9-2 run, but the Bengals battled back again, tying the score at 97-97 with a pair of Simmons' free throws with 13 seconds left. The Statesmen finally ended the scoring, however, with a jumper with just six seconds on the clock.

Buffalo State outrebounded Hobart, 53-40, and scored 21 second-chance points, compared to just 10 by the Statesmen. The Bengals could not overcome 21 turnovers that led to 26 Hobart points however, and Hobart also outscored the Bengals 21-3 from 3-point range.

Buffalo State will return to SUNYAC play at home against Plattsburgh on Friday at 8 p.m.
