BUFFALO, NY— Staci McElroy (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) had 16 points and 10 rebounds, but Buffalo State (11-13/6-11) came up just short against visiting first-place Cortland (21-3/16-1), 62-60, in a SUNYAC game tonight at the Buffalo State Sports Arena.

Micki Volpini (Newfield/Newfield) led Cortland with 20 points, nine rebounds and five steals. Jessica Laing (Bloomville/South Kortright) added 16 points and seven rebounds, and Jennifer Patten (Bainbridge/Bainbridge-Guilford) scored 10 points.

Jessica Clark (Fulton/G. Ray Bodley) netted 14 points for the Bengals, and Kristin Ritch (Dobbs Ferry/Dobbs Ferry) added 11.

Buffalo State raced out to an 18-8 lead to open the game, but the Red Dragons roared back with an 18-0 run of their own and led 30-24 at the intermission. Cortland grew its lead to nine points in the second half, but the Bengals hung around and trailed just 61-60 in the closing seconds. After Cortland retrieved an offensive rebound with seven seconds, Buffalo State was unable to foul until just 0.3 seconds remained. The Red Dragons hit 1 of 2 free throws to end the game with the two-point victory. The Bengals were 8 of 17 from 3-point range to keep them in striking distance all night. Cortland was just 3 of 16 from long range for the game.

Buffalo State wore pink uniforms as part of the WBCA Pink Zone initiative, a global, unified effort for the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The WBCA began the WBCA Pink Zone, formerly known as "Think Pink", in 2007 as an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women's basketball, on campuses and in communities.

Buffalo State will wrap up the regular season tomorrow at home at 2 p.m. against Oswego.
