CORTLAND, NY—Buffalo State (1-2) dropped a pair of matches tonight in the opening round of the Cortland Red Dragon Classic, falling in straight sets to the host school, before going the distance before losing a heartbreaker against Nazareth.

The host Red Dragons swept the Bengals, 25-17, 25-17 and 25-20 in the opener. Freshman Mary Naboi (Syracuse/Nottingham) paced the Buffalo State offense with nine kills, and Stephanie Kazmierczak (Buffalo/City Honors) had 19 assists.

Buffalo State pushed the Golden Flyers to the limit in the late match, but could not close it out, falling 10-25, 25-23, 25-23, 17-25 and 13-15. Allyson Pierce (Olcott/Newfane) pounded out a Bengal-best 11 kills, and Kazmierczak posted 31 assists. Chelsea Moore (Kenmore/Kenmore West) recorded 13 digs, and Rachel Algbedo (Yonkers/Yonkers) added four blocks.

Buffalo State will wrap up the two-day invitational tomorrow.
