No. 16 Men’s Basketball Edges Oneonta in SUNYAC Opener, 80-76

Jake Simmons netted 27 points for the second-consecutive game
Box Score ONEONTA, NY— Jake Simmons (Rochester/School of the Arts) netted 27 points for the second-straight game as No. 16-ranked Buffalo State (4-0/1-0) survived a scare from host Oneonta (1-4/0-1), winning  its SUNYAC opener, 80-76, tonight at Alumni Field House.

Simmons was 9 of 14 from the field, including 5 of 7 from 3-point range and added five rebounds and four steals.  Justin Mitchell (Buffalo/Timon) added 17 points and five steals, and Ahmed Nagaya (Bronx/Astor Collegiate) had 10 points and 12 rebounds.

The game feature 11 lead changes with neither team ever leading by more than six points.  Buffalo State took a 39-36 lead into the second half, and took the lead for good on a 3-pointer by Simmons with 10:19 remaining, at 62-59.  The Bengals pushed the advantage to 75-69 with 4:15 left, before the Red Dragons cut it to 77-76 with 29 ticks remaining.  Buffalo State knocked down 3 of 4 free throws in the closing seconds to hang on for the win.

Buffalo State will next open SUNYAC play this Friday at Oneonta at 8 p.m.
