Men’s Basketball Tops Plattsburgh in Overtime Thriller, 81-80

Justin Mitchell hit the game-winning layup with four seconds left in overtime
(BOX SCORE)

BUFFALO, NY—Justin Mitchell (Buffalo/Timon) had 21 points and 13 rebounds and capped a frantic overtime finish with a layup with four seconds remaining to give Buffalo State (17-6/12-5) an 81-80 win over visiting Plattsburgh (15-9/11-6) in a SUNYAC game tonight at the Sports Arena.

Plattsburgh hit a tip-in with eight seconds remaining in overtime to take a one-point lead, but Mitchell, who lost a tooth earlier in the game, raced down the court to hit the winning layup. The Cardinals launched a desperation shot at the buzzer that did not connect.

Chris Cartwright (Binghamton/Binghamton) led Buffalo State with 23 points, but fouled out late in regulation. Glenroy Carr (New York/Sweet Home) added 16 points, and Jake Simmons (Rochester/School for the Arts) had 15 for the Bengals.   Norman Simmons (Rochester/East) dished out a career-high nine assists.

The game featured 22 lead changes and saw Plattsburgh ahead 36-33 at halftime. Buffalo State took the biggest lead of the game midway through the second half when it went up by nine, but Plattsburgh stormed back. After leading briefly, the Cardinals had a chance to break a 69-69 tie with six seconds remaining in regulation, but missed a pair of free throws, setting up the extra session.

The Cardinals shot a dismal 43-percent from the free-throw line, hitting just 13 of 30 chances, compared to 7 of 12 shooting by the Bengals.

Buffalo State will conclude the regular season tomorrow at home against Potsdam at 4 p.m.
