Men’s Basketball to Host Cortland in SUNYAC Playoffs on Tuesday Evening

BUFFALO, NY—Second-seeded Buffalo State will host No. 7 Cortland in a SUNYAC Quarterfinal matchup on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Sports Arena.

Buffalo State enters the SUNYAC tournament at the No. 2 seed with a 13-5 league mark and is 18-6 overall, riding and eight-game winning streak. Buffalo State's 18 wins are the most for the school in a single season since 2002-03 when they went 19-9 and captured a SUNYAC Championship. Cortland is the seventh seed, finishing the regular season 10-15 overall and 7-11 in conference. The Red Dragons won four of their last six games to secure a playoff berth.

Buffalo State is 49-35 all-time against Cortland, including a pair of wins over the Red Dragons this season. The Bengals won 83-74 at home in December, and claimed a 70-68 win at Cortland in late January. The last time Buffalo State hosted a playoff game was Feb. 24, 2009, however, and it was Cortland who upset the Bengals, 68-65.

Jake Simmons (Rochester/School for the Arts) leads the 2010-11 Bengals and paces the SUNYAC, averaging 19.7 points and 2.9 steals-per-game. He has also broken his own single-season school record for 3-pointers with 71. Chris Cartwright (Binghamton/Binghamton) is averaging 17.0 points and has a team-best 88 assists, and Justin Mitchell (Buffalo/Bishop-Timon) is putting up 13.9 points and 7.6 rebounds.

Buffalo State has not won a playoff game since defeating New Paltz, 73-40, in the 2003 SUNYAC Championship Game. In all, the Bengals have won 17 SUNYAC titles, including 11 from 1984-2003. The current run of eight years without a championship marks the second longest stretch in school history, behind a 12-year drought between1972-84.

Tickets will be available at the door beginning at 6 p.m. Adults are $5, and student tickets are $2. The first 500 Buffalo State students with ID will be admitted for free.
