BUFFALO, NY—Ben Waldman (Pittsford, NY) scored all three Fredonia (13-12-1) goals and the sixth-seeded Blue Devils overcame a pair of one-goal deficits to upset third-seeded host Buffalo State (12-11-3), 3-2, in a SUNYAC Quarterfinal matchup tonight at the Ice Arena.

All five of the game's goals came in the second period. Steve Rizer (Smithtown, NY) and Bryan Ross (Livonia, MI) each tallied a pair of assists for Fredonia.

Shane Avery (Fort Covington, NY/Salmon River) score both Buffalo State goals, and Mac Balson (Lakefield, ON/Adam Scott CVI) and Kyle Whipple (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore West) both assisted on each goal.

After a scoreless first period where both teams played close it to the vest, each team came out firing in the second period. Avery opened the scoring just 1:12 into the second frame when he pounced on a loose puck in the slot. Fredonia answered just under three minutes later when Waldman netted his first of the game on a third chance whack at a bouncing puck in the crease on the power play. Avery put the Bengals ahead again with a wrister from 20 feet with less than four minutes remaining in the frame, but the Blue Devils came back to take the lead with two more late Waldman goals, including another power-play tip-in with nine seconds left on the clock.

The Bengals were unable to net the equalizer, going 0 for 3 on the power play in the final stanza and 0 for 5 for the game. Fredonia finished 2 for 2 with the man advantage, and held a narrow 29-28 edge in shots on goal.

Mark Friesen (Calgary, AB) made 26 stops for Fredonia, and Kevin Carr (Unionville, ON/Unionville) turned aside 26 shots for the Bengals.

Fredonia will advance to the SUNYAC semifinals on Saturday at No. 1 Oswego at 7 p.m. Buffalo State ends its season with 12 wins, matching a single-season school record.
