Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—Buffalo State (25-10) made history today with the program's first-ever appearance in the NCAA Playoffs, but saw its season come to an end with a four-set loss to the University of Chicago (27-10) at Calvin College. The Maroons defeated the Bengals, 25-13, 24-26, 25-20 and 25-14.
Kayla Pyc (Grand Island/Grand Island) led Buffalo State with 10 kills and three blocks. Senior
Kelsey Bashore (Antwerp, OH/Antwerp) finished with 23 assists and 15 digs, and fellow senior
Chelsea Moore (Kenmore/Kenmore West) had 24 digs.
Hannah Renaldo (N. Collins/N. Collins) had nine kills, and
Jessica Crooks (Niagara Falls/Niagara/Wheatfield) had six.
Buffalo State showed some opening-set jitters and fell behind 6-1 early and could not get in sync, dropping the first set 25-13. The Bengals regrouped in the second set and overcame an 11-7 deficit to eventually pull even with a 26-24 win. Buffalo State carried the momentum into the third set and built an early 8-2 lead, but the Maroons battled back and pulled away late for the five-point win. Chicago scored the first six points of the fourth set and never looked back.
Chicago finished with a .244 attack percentage, compared to just .082 by the Bengals, and had 63 kills, compared to 37 by Buffalo State. Chicago also had a 10-4 advantage in blocks.
Buffalo State's 25 wins were the fourth-highest single-season total in school history.
