Men’s Hockey Claims Skidmore Invitational in Shootout After 2-2 Tie

Buffalo State won the shootout to claim the tournament title
Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY—Buffalo State (4-2-3) held on for a 2-2 tie against host Skidmore (3-3-3) today and then captured the Thoroughbreds' Invitational with a 1-0 win in the eighth round of a shootout on a goal by Taylor Pryce (Newmarket, ON/Cardinal Carter).

Buffalo State opened the scoring just 2:25 into the game with Taylor McGraw's (N. Lawrence, NY/St. Lawrence) second goal of the season. Shane Avery (Fort Covington, NY/Salmon River) pushed the lead to 2-0 midway through the second period with his second of the season, also unassisted. The Thoroughbreds got on the board late in the second frame with a power-play marker, and then evened the score with another tally with the man-advantage with just 3:20 remaining in regulation.

Neither team would score in overtime or the first seven rounds of the shootout. Kevin Carr (Unionville, ON/Unionville) finished with 27 saves, plus eight more stops in the shootout and was named the tournament MVP.

The Bengals were outshot 29-24. Skidmore finished 2 for 6 on the power play, and Buffalo State was 0 for 1 with the extra attacker as just one penalty was called on the host Thoroughbreds.

The game is officially recorded as a tie.

Mike Zannella (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) was also named to the All-Tournament Team for Buffalo State.

Buffalo State will return to SUNYAC play at home this Friday against Geneseo at 7 p.m.
