ALFRED, NY—Buffalo State (4-4-2) proved to be a class above Alfred State (8-3-1), as
Breanna Knight (Valley Stream/Valley Stream South) netted three goals and the Bengals sprinted past the host Pioneers, 8-0, in a non-conference game this evening under the lights.
Goals came early and often for the Bengals who piled up a 6-0 lead before the first intermission, outshooting the Pioneers, 16-2 over the first 45 minutes. Freshman
Gina Taggart (Chester/Monroe-Woodbury) opened the scoring with her first collegiate goal just over six minutes into the game.
Meghan Allen (Big Flats/Corning East) then tallied her third goal in just three games, before
Malyssa Chanthasoto (Norwood, NJ/NV at Old Tappan) pushed the score to 3-0. Knight scored a pair of goals sandwiched around a strike by
Tianna Hatch (Endicott/Elmira Free Academy) to complete the first half scoring.
Buffalo State played the possession game for most of the second half, with Knight finishing off the hat trick, before
Victoria Colotti (New Windsor/Newburgh Free) completed the scoring with a late marker.
Megan Chapple (Utica/Whitesboro) had a pair of assists, while Hatch,
Emma Laffey (Red Bank, NJ/Middletown) and
Katie Shaw (Burt/Newfane) chipped in assists for the Bengals.
Freshman goalkeepers
Jessica McCarey (Middletown/Middletown) and
Nicole Torres (Wantagh/MacArthur) combined for the shutout. McCarey made just one save, playing the first half, before Torres finished with four saves over the final 45 minutes. Buffalo State finished with a 20-8 advantage in shots for the game.
The victory marked the 99th win in Buffalo State career for head coach
Nicholas DeMarsh.
Buffalo State will return to SUNYAC play on Saturday when it hosts Fredonia at 1 p.m. The game will be part of the inaugural "Battle by the Lake", the season-long all-sports competition between the two schools.
