HOUGHTON, NY – Sam Parente (E. Patchogue, NY/Bellport) led the Buffalo State (22-10) Bengals to a 3-0 win over Alfred (5-24) Friday evening on the first night of the Houghton Invitational.
The Bengals opened up the match strong, winning the opening set 25-7. In the second set, Alfred put up a fight, but Buffalo State managed to finish on top 25-23. The Bengals closed things in the third set, 25-13.
Parente led the way offensively with seven kills. Jessica Crooks (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) added six kills, while Courtney White (Ft. Lauderdale, FL/St. Thomas Aquinas) and Kayla Pyc (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) each tallied five. Jennifer Cecchettini (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) recorded a team-high 14 assists and Britt Hallett-Jonathan (Basom, NY/Akron) added 10.
Defensively, Rachelle Kelchlin (West Seneca, NY/St. Mary's) tallied 10 digs.
Buffalo State finished the match with 27 kills and 12 errors, compared to Alfred's 17 kills and 23 errors.
The Bengals close out the Houghton Invitational and the regular season on Saturday afternoon with a match against Houghton at 11 a.m. and a match against Utica at 1 p.m.
