Men’s Hockey Trips Geneseo in Overtime, 3-2

GENESEO, NY—Freshman Zach Nieminen (Ajax, ON/Notre Dame CSS) netted his first collegiate goal 2:32 into overtime to lift Buffalo State (2-6-2/2-4-2) to a 3-2 victory over host Geneseo (6-4-1/5-4-0) tonight in a SUNYAC contest.

Geneseo opened the score just 1:04 into the contest, but the Bengals answered with a pair of first-period goals of their own.  Taylor Pryce (Newmarket, ON/Cardinal Carter) tallied his first of the season with an assist from Nick Berst (Depew, NY/Lancaster), before Ryan Salkeld (Virginia Beach, VA/Churchland) gave the Bengals the lead with a helper from Jason Zaleski (Scranton, PA/Scranton).

The Knights scored the only goal of the second period to even the score, while holding a 15-5 advantage in shots in the middle frame.  Geneseo continued to apply pressure in the third period, outshooting the Bengals 11-4, but Ian Sylves (Sloan, NY/JFK) stood tall between the pipes for Buffalo State.

Nieminen ended the game in the Bengals' favor on the team's third shot of the extra session, and Zaleski and Garrett Chardon (Old Field, NY/Ward Melville) was credited with the assists.

Sylves finished with 36 saves for his first collegiate win as Geneseo outshot the Bengals 38-24 for the game.

Buffalo State will next host Johnson & Wales in a non-conference game next Saturday at 4 p.m.
