BUFFALO, NY— Clarkson (4-1-1) made the most of its opportunities and cruised past host Buffalo State (1-4), 4-1, in a non-conference game today at Coyer Field.
The Golden Knights opened the scoring in just the 10th minute when a long ball found an unmarked Tucker Wilcox streaking down the left wing who converted on the breakaway. Clarkson pushed the lead to 2-0 with a nifty give-and-go in the box that resulted in a goal by Kevin Calnan.
Buffalo State cut the deficit in half before the intermission, when
Barak Benyehuda's (Syracuse/Westhill) long pass found
Joe Vucic (East Aurora/East Aurora) open to the left of the goal. Vucic wasted little time blasting a shot through the Clarkson keeper for his third goal of the season.
The Golden Knights put the game out of reach early in the second half, however, netting a pair of nearly identical goals less than two minutes apart. Marco Parisi converted on the first of back-to-back 20-yard free kicks, with Trevor Blackwell scoring on the second attempt.
Buffalo State finished with a 10-7 edge in shots and a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks, but could not overcome some key mistakes.
Ian Huntoon (Stamford, CT/West Hill) played the first half in goal, allowing two goals while making one save.
Hunter Hein (E. Amherst/Clarence) played the final 45 minutes and surrendered goals on both of the shots he faced.
Buffalo State will host No. 19 St. Lawrence tomorrow at 2 p.m.
