GENESEO, NY—
Chris Thompson (Far Rockaway/Channel View) hit a layup with second seconds left to tie the game and then knocked down a free throw with less than a second remaining to give Buffalo State (7-6/3-4) its third-consecutive win, defeating host Geneseo (8-5/4-2), 87-86, this afternoon in a SUNYAC game.
Thompson finished with 27 points and nine rebounds.
Roderick Epps (Uniondale/Uniondale) netted a game-high 30 points, and
Derrick Fernandez (Brooklyn/Herbert H. Lehman) added eight points, six rebounds and seven assists.
Buffalo State led 44-38 at halftime, but Geneseo rallied and led by as many as nine midway through the second half. The Bengals continued to trail by nine at 84-77 with 1:18 remaining, before mounting a furious comeback.
The Bengals closed the deficit to two with five-straight points, but Geneseo hit a pair of free throws with 23 seconds left to push the lead back to four. Thompson hit a quick layup, and then following a steal by
Chris Cartwright (Binghamton/Binghamton), Thompson hit another layup to tie the score with seven seconds left. Then Thompson stole the inbounds pass, was fouled and hit the second of two free throws to give the Bengals the victory with just 0.4 seconds on the clock.
The Bengals protected the ball, committing just eight turnovers, compared to 18 by Geneseo.
Buffalo State will travel to Fredonia on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in search of a fourth-straight win.
