Women’s Hockey Shuts Down Canton, 8-1

BUFFALO, NY – Senior Kara Goodwin (Avon Lake, OH/Avon Lake) scored a career-best four goals and added an assist to power Buffalo State (7-5-2) to an 8-1 non-conference victory over Canton (2-18-1) on Saturday afternoon at the Ice Arena.

The Bengals started the game out strong and quickly gained control of the puck. After multiple opportunities, Buffalo State took advantage of a power play and Christine Harris (Mountain Top, PA/Wyoming Seminary) netted the first goal of the game at 15:22. Minutes later, Goodwin posted what would become the game winner and her first goal of the game to give Buffalo State a 2-0 lead heading into the second period.

Goodwin added a second goal just nine minutes into the second period to stretch the Bengals lead to 3-0. The Kangaroo's managed to get through the Bengal defense and tally a goal, their only one of the game, at 17:41.

The Bengals came alive in the third period, scoring five goals with two coming from power plays. Viivi Vaattovaara (Viekkola, Finland/Hameenlinnan Lyseon Lukio) started things off with a goal, her first as a Bengal, at 10:11 and Nikki Kirchberger (Buffalo, NY/W. Seneca West) tallied a goal less than four minutes later on the power play. Goodwin tallied two goals in 20 seconds to give Buffalo State a 7-1 lead with under three minutes to play. In the final 21 seconds Maddie Toczek (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) scored her first career goal to close things out for the Bengals.

Buffalo State finished the game with a commanding 54-18 advantage in shots.

Megan Sackett (Williamsville, NY/A.N. Myer) earned her first career win between the pipes and finished with 17 saves.

Goodwin's four goals moves her into second in school history for career goals with 37. She is currently eight goals away from first place, which is held by Emma Wadsworth (00-04') who finished with 45 total career goals.

The Bengals return to action on Wednesday evening on the road against Adrian College at 7 p.m.
