FREDONIA, NY – Despite outshooting Fredonia (6-8, 3-5 SUNYAC) from the floor, Buffalo State (8-7, 5-3 SUNYAC) could not overcome poor free throw shooting and fell to Fredonia 72-67 in a conference matchup on Tuesday night.
Senior Ashley Wallace (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) led the Bengals with her fourth double-double of the season, scoring 21 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Niasha Houpe (Rochester, NY/William Floyd) added 12 points and seven rebounds, while Keyonte Edwards (Buffalo,NY/ O'Hara) chipped in nine points four steals. Brittnee Perry (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) tallied eight points and eight rebounds.
Both teams kept the game close in the opening minutes, trading the lead back-and-forth. The score remained close until the Bengals used a 9-0 run to take a 34-22 lead at 3:20. Fredonia, however, fought back in the closing minute of the half to cut the Bengals lead down to 36-30 heading into halftime.
Fredonia used the momentum it had gained at the end of the first half to open up the second half with a 21-10 run, to take a 51-46 lead.
The Bengals managed to cut the Blue Devils lead down to just one point after a fast break layup from Edwards, a strong defensive stop and another layup from Wallace. The Blue Devils withstood the run from Buffalo State and a three-point basket gave them a 57-51 lead with 7:42 to play.
Buffalo State was able to rally again, pulling within two, 64-62, on two free throws by Perry at 2:15. Unfortunately, the Blue Devils point guard quickly got down the court and completed a three-point play.
In the final minute, the Bengals could not sink the shot they needed to get the win.
Buffalo State finished the night shooting 39.1 percent from the floor, 18.2 percent (2-11) from behind the arc and just 39.1 percent from the charity stripe. Fredonia finished the game with a 47-43 advantage in rebounds. The Blue Devils shot 40.3 percent from the floor, 21.1 percent from long range and 64.3 percent from the free throw line.
With the Blue Devils win, Fredonia added to its lead in the all-sports season-long Battle By the Lake with Buffalo State, 10-2.
The Bengals return to action at home on Friday for a SUNYAC matchup against Oneonta at 7:30 p.m.
