BUFFALO, NY – Senior Chris Cartwright (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) recorded 19 points and went 12-for-13 from the free throw line, but Buffalo State's (3-5, 0-3 SUNYAC) second half comeback fell short as Brockport (4-4, 1-0 SUNYAC) held on in the final minutes for a 77-70 conference win on Tuesday night in Sports Arena.
Cartwright led the way on offense with 19 points, three assists and five rebounds. Roderick Epps (Uniondale, NY/Uniondale) and Lovell Smith (Buffalo, NY/McKinley) each added 15 points, while Jordan Glover (Buffalo, NY/St. Joe's) pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
Both teams were evenly matched through most of the first half with the score remaining close. The Bengals took a five point lead, their largest of the game, off a jumper from Epps with 7:41 to play. However, the Golden Eagles were sparked by a turnover and went on an 11-0 run to take a six point lead. Buffalo State tried to chip away at the lead in the final minutes of the half, but the Golden Eagles held a five point lead heading into halftime.
Strong shooting from Brockport to start the second half helped the Golden Eagles push their lead out to 17, their largest of the game. In the final two minutes of play, Buffalo State turned up the defense and managed to cut Brockport's lead to four, but strong free throw shooting from the Golden Eagles kept them ahead.
The Bengals finished the game shooting 32.8% (21-64) from the floor, 20.0% (3-15) from long range and 71.4% from the charity stripe. The Golden Eagles shot 50% (26-52) from the floor, 36.4% (4-11) from the three point line and 75.0% (21-28) from the chairty stripe, while finishing with a slight 42-38 advantage in rebounds.
Buffalo State returns to action at home for a SUNYAC matchup against Potsdam on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
