BUFFALO, NY – Senior Ashley Wallace (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) scored a team-high 24 points to lead Buffalo State (5-5, 2-1 SUNYAC) right past Brockport (2-7, 0-1 SUNYAC) 78-61 in a SUNYAC matchup on Tuesday night in Sports Arena.
Wallace paced the Bengals offensively with 24 points, three steals and eight rebounds. Hillary Kollar (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown) recorded 14 points and eight rebounds, while Olivia Luciani (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minoa) added 12 points and a team-high five assists. Brittnee Perry (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) pulled down a team-high 14 rebounds and freshman Keyonte Edwards (Buffalo, NY/O'Hara) tallied her first career double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Brockport jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the opening minute of the game, but the Bengals followed up with a 7-0 run to tie things at 16:38. Buffalo State took its largest lead of the half, seven points, with just under 10 minutes to play after a fast break layup from Wallace. A few quick three's from the Golden Eagles and Brockport was able to take back the lead with 7:02 on the clock. The Bengals once again put together a run and took back the lead at 5:21 and would not relinquish it. Buffalo State took a 34-31 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Golden Eagles came out strong and tied the game up at 15:59. However, Buffalo State responded with a quick 10-0 run. Edwards tallied five points on the run that put the Bengals up 52-42 with 12:10 left to play. With 4:02 left on the clock, Brockport cut the Buffalo State lead to five, but strong shooting in the closing minutes helped the Bengals earn a 17-point victory.
Buffalo State finished the game shooting 37.8% (28-74) from the floor, 13.3% (2-15) from long range and 64.5% (20-31) from the free throw line. The Bengals held a 56-36 advantage in rebounds and tallied 17 bench points in comparison to Brockport's six. The Golden Eagles finished the night shooting 38.9% (21-54) from the floor, 25.9% (7-27) from long range and 63.2% (12-19) from the free throw line.
The Bengals return to action at home for a SUNYAC matchup against Potsdam on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
