Women’s Soccer Breaks School Record for Wins, Drops St. John Fisher, 3-1

PITTSFORD, N.Y.—Buffalo State scored three unanswered goals in a 3-1 non-conference victory over host St. John Fisher today en route to setting a school record with its 14th win of the season and extending its unbeaten streak to 14 games to close the regular season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • St. John Fisher opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, but the Bengals would bounce back and take a 2-1 lead by halftime.
  • Gabrianna Boldinski (Tonawanda/Kenmore East) evened the score with her fourth goal of the season in the 33rd minute, before Melissa Smith (N. Tonawanda/Niagara-Wheatfield) netted her team-leading eighth of the season to give the Bengals the lead just 18 seconds before the intermission.
  • Meghan Allen (Big Flats/Corning East) added an insurance marker, her fifth, with an assist from Smith with just over five minutes remaining in the second half.
  • Buffalo State finished with a 14-10 advantage in shots, and Nicole Torres (Wantagh/MacArthur) made three saves for the win in her first action of the season.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Carly Finn scored the lone goal for the Cardinals, while Melissa McGowan made five saves in goal.
 
NOTEWORTHY
  • Buffalo State set a school record with its 14th win of the season.  The previous mark was set in 1984 when the Bengals finished 13-7-1.
  • Buffalo State extended its unbeaten streak to 14 games at 13-0-1.

Buffalo State is the top seed entering the SUNYAC playoffs and will enjoy a first-round bye in the before hosting a semifinal matchup on Wednesday, Nov. 4 at 1 p.m. against the winner of No. 4 Plattsburgh/No. 5 Brockport (Saturday).
