Men’s Soccer Season Ends at Cortland in SUNYAC Quarters, 2-0


CORTLAND, N.Y.Buffalo State junior goalkeeper William Banahene (Rochester/Brighton) finished with nine saves, but it was not enough to backstop the No. 6-seeded Bengals to a victory, as host No. 3 Cortland advanced with a 2-0 victory in this afternoon's SUNYAC Quarterfinal contest at Jets Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Cortland outshot Buffalo State 9-2 in the first half and broke through in the 34th minute with a goal by Robby Reiser on a volley off of long throw in by Sean Streb.
  • Buffalo State applied pressure in the second half, controlling long periods of play, but could not convert on any of its 10 shots to tally the equalizer. 
  • The Red Dragons sealed the victory with Tyler Kirschner's ninth goal of the season on a one-on-one with the keeper with just 25 seconds remaining.
  • Cortland finished with a 17-12 advantage in shots for the game and had a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
  • Joe Brandofino finished with four saves to preserve the shutout for the Red Dragons.
 
NOTEWORTHY
  • Buffalo State's final record of 10-7-2 represented the program's highest single-season win total since 2008 when it won 11 games.
  • Today's postseason appearance was the second in three years under third-year head coach Mark Howlett, after qualifying for the playoffs just twice in the previous 14 years prior to his arrival.
  • Luke Pavone's (Churchville/Churchville-Chili) 11 goals this season were the most by a Bengal since Brian Miller scored 16 in 2003.

Cortland will advance to play at top-seeded Oneonta in the semifinals on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.  Buffalo State will look forward to next season, graduating just two seniors, Robby Kuhnle (Pleasant Valley/Arlington) and Barry Hunt (East Aurora/East Aurora).
