Women’s Soccer Falls to Oneonta 3-1 in SUNYAC Championship


BUFFALO, N.Y.— Meghan Allen (Big Flats/Corning East) scored early in the second half to tie things up, but Oneonta managed two quick goals late in the game to take the 3-1 win on Saturday afternoon during the SUNYAC Championship.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Melissa Smith (N. Tonawanda/Niagara-Wheatfield) nearly scored in the 12th minute of play to give the Bengals a 1-0 lead, but the Red Dragon goalkeeper came up with the save.
  • Buffalo State once again came close to scoring a few minutes later, but the Bengals penalty kick hit the post and bounced out at 18:53.
  • Oneonta got on the board in the 25th minute to take a 1-0 lead after Amanda Roney found the back of the net with a quick shot across the box.
  • The Bengals fired off seven shots in the later part of the half, pressuring the Oneonta defense, but would head into halftime still down by one goal.
  • Buffalo State came out quickly in the second half. Allen tallied her seventh goal of the season, chipping the ball over the goalkeeper off a pass from Smith.
  • The Bengals continued to outshoot the Red Dragons, but were not able to find the back of the net.
  • Overtime seemed near as the teams remained tied with just 10 minutes to play, but Oneonta managed to take the momentum with a goal in the 83rd minute. Kayla Distin quickly redirected the ball into the goal off a rebound off the post.
  • Just over three minutes later, the Red Dragons pushed their lead to two and sealed the win with a goal from Kayla Ceschini.
  • Buffalo State finished the game with an 18-8 advantage in total shots and a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Erica Knudsen (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) finished the game with three saves.   
FOR THE FOES
  • Kayla Ceschini recorded one goal and had an assist on the game-winning goal to lead the Red Dragon offense.
  • Kelley Murphy recorded the win in net, playing in the first half and making six saves. Rori Stark played the final 45 minutes and made seven saves.

Oneonta earns the automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. Buffalo State will learn on Monday at 1 pm during the NCAA selection show if they will be chosen for an at-large berth.
