BUFFALO, NY—Buffalo State split a pair of road games this past weekend to secure the No. 5 seed entering the SUNYAC playoffs and will travel to No. 4 Brockport tomorrow at 7 p.m. for a quarterfinal contest.
The Bengals finished the regular season 15-9 overall and 11-7 in SUNYAC play. Buffalo State opened the season just 1-4, but after senior guard
Chris Cartwright (Binghamton/Binghamton) returned to the lineup after the first semester, the Bengals went 14-5 the rest of the way. Cartwright is second on the team averaging 15.2 points-per-game, and is also averaging 4.8 assists.
Senior
Roderick Epps (Uniondale/Uniondale) is leading the Bengals, averaging 16.5 points and ranks third in school history with 1,499 career points.
Lovell Smith (Buffalo/McKinley) and
Chris Thompson (Far Rockaway/Channel View) are also averaging scoring in double-figures. Smith is scoring 12.7 points-per-game, and Thompson has averaged 10.8 points and a team-best 7.2 rebounds-per-contest.
Brockport is 14-11 overall and also finished 11-7 in league play, but won the tie-breaker over the Bengals by virtue of defeating top-seeded Plattsburgh. The Golden Eagles won five of their last six games to secure the fourth seed.
Buffalo State split the regular-season series with Brockport with each team winning on the road. The Golden Eagles won in Buffalo on Jan. 6, 77-70, and the Bengals won in Brockport on Jan. 16, 85-69.
Buffalo State is making its first SUNYAC postseason appearance since 2012, and is looking for its first playoff win since defeating Brockport in the 2011 SUNYAC Championship game in 2011.
