Women’s Lacrosse Drops Home Opener Against No. 17 St. John Fisher, 14-9

BUFFALO, NY—Buffalo State (1-2) jumped out to an early 4-2 lead, but No. 17 St. John Fisher (4-1) battled back to spoil the Bengals' home opener, 14-9, in a non-conference game today at Coyer Field.

Sarah Lorusso (Lakeview/Frontier) led Buffalo State with three goals and an assist, while freshman Alanna Herne (Tonawanda/Tonawanda) scored twice and added a helper.  Meghan Farrell (Endicott/Union-Endicott) also netted a pair of goals.  Alexis Wilensky (Syracuse/Corcoran) chipped in a goal and two assists, and Cassie Saint-Vil (Middletown/Middletown) added a single goal for Buffalo State.

Buffalo State opened the scoring on Lorusso's first just 44 seconds into the game and continued to lead 5-3 less than 10 minutes into the game.  The Cardinals scored the finals four goals of the first half, however, to take a 7-5 lead into the intermission.

Buffalo State scored the first goal of the second half to cut the deficit to one, but was unable to pull even.  The Cardinals mounted a 7-1 run from there to pull away, before the Bengals added the game's final two goals.

The Cardinals capitalized on a 15-9 advantage in draw controls to overcome committing 22 turnovers, compared to 16 by Buffalo State.  Fisher also held a narrow 26-23 edge in shots.

Elyse Stark (Lido Beach/Long Beach) started the game in goal for the Bengals and was issued the loss, surrendering seven goals, while making two stops.  Colleen George (Johnson City/Maine-Endwell) came on in relief with less than five minutes remaining in the first half, and made five saves, while also allowing seven goals.

Buffalo State will next take on Tufts at a neutral site at Union College on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
