Softball Sweeps on Day Four; Takes Down RIT and Union

CLERMONT, Fla. – After a four hour rain delay, Buffalo State (4-4) earned a 4-1 win over RIT (1-4) and then defeated Union (2-4) 5-3 in game two on Monday at the National Training Center.

The Bengal defense played strong in game one against RIT, holding the Tigers hitless through the first five innings. Buffalo State had a few opportunities to score early, but did not get on the board until the top of the fifth inning. Taylor Swiatek (East Aurora, NY/Orchard Park) ripped a double to center field to start things off. Alexis Haley (Rochester, NY/Aquinas) followed up with a bunt and Swiatek took advantage of a throwing error by the Tigers pitcher to score the first run of the game. Pinch runner, Abijah Adams (Rochester, NY/Greece-Arcadia), scored on the following play after Joanna Bardak (Amherst, NY/Amherst) hit a shot out to center field. RIT attempted to make a comeback in the bottom of the sixth, scoring a run and loading the bases. Alison Novak (Amherst, NY/Williamsville North) came in as the reliever and the Bengals quickly got the two outs they needed to end the inning without the Tigers earning another run. In the top of the seventh, Stephanie Novo (Cheektowaga, NY/Depew) and Swiatek each tallied an RBI to give Buffalo State a 4-1 lead that it would close out the game with.

Swiatek finished the game 2 for 4 with one run and one RBI. Novo finished 1 for 3 with one run and one RBI. Megan Mingle (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) and Adams both added runs.

Maddie Coneys (Clifton Park, NY/Catholic Central) recorded her first win of the season in the circle. She pitched 5.1 innings, allowing one run on one hit with two strikeouts. Novak closed out the final 1.2 innings, allowing zero runs, one hit and one strikeout.

The Buffalo State bats got going quickly in game two against Union. The Bengals scored all five of their runs off four hits in the first inning. Swiatek and Sarah Gorski (Cheektowaga, NY/Depew) scored off a double up the middle from Haley. Two batters later, Danielle Szymkowiak (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) singled up the middle to score Haley. After a pitching change from Union, Jenna Clarke (Brockport, NY/Brockport) and Jean Stahl (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East) each tallied RBI's to put Buffalo State up 5-0. Union cut the Bengals lead down to two with three runs off of three hits and a Bengal error in the top of the third. Buffalo State, however, once again played tough defense and held Union scoreless in the final four innings of the game to seal the win.

Szymkowiak finished the game 1 for 2 with one run and one RBI. Swiatek and Haley both finished 1 for 3 with one run, while Haley added two RBI's. Gorski and Bardak each tallied a run as well.

Haley recorded her first win of the season in the circle. She pitched all seven innings, allowing three runs on nine hits with four strikeouts.

Buffalo State will conclude its stay in Clermont on Tuesday morning with games against University of Northwestern and Wisconsin-Whitewater at 9 and 11 a.m., respectively.
