Women’s Soccer Shuts Out Geneseo, Wins Fifth Straight

BUFFALO, N.Y.—Buffalo State posted its third-consecutive shutout and earned its fifth-straight victory, including two to open SUNYAC play, defeating visiting Geneseo, 1-0, today at Coyer Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Geneseo applied early pressure and sailed a shot off of the cross bar in the early going, but Buffalo State took control from their and never allowed the Knights to threaten again. 
  • The Bengals produced all of the offense they needed in the 12th minute when Gabrianna Boldinski (Tonawanda/Kenmore East) headed a nicely served corner kick from Melissa Smith (N. Tonawanda/Niagara-Wheatfield) into the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
  • The Bengals took the lead into the second half and played relentless defense, not allowing its opposition and space and outshooting Geneseo, 6-1, over the final 45 minutes.
  • Buffalo State finished with a 9-6 advantage in shots for the game and only surrendered a single shot on goal from wide on the right wing in the opening half.
  • Freshman Erica Knudsen (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) needed to make just a single save for her third-consecutive shutout.

  • Emily Janiszewski finished with six saves for Geneseo.
 
NOTEWORTHY
  • Buffalo State has not allowed a goal in 313 minutes and 51 seconds of play.
  • The Bengals are 2-0 to open SUNYAC play for the first time since 2010.
 
UP NEXT
Buffalo State will continue SUNYAC play next Saturday at Fredonia at 1 p.m.  The game will be part of the season-long all-sports "Battle by the Lake" rivalry competition between the two schools.
