Three second-half goals keep women's soccer perfect in SUNYAC

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Buffalo State scored three second-half goals, two by forward Melissa Smith (N. Tonawanda/Niagara Wheatfield), to down Fredonia, 3-0 to remain perfect in SUNYAC play at Coyer Field on Saturday.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Buffalo State – 3, Fredonia - 0
LOCATION: Coyer Field - Buffalo, NY
RECORDS: Buffalo State (7-2-1, 3-0-0), Fredonia (3-8-0, 0-3-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Despite controlling possession for most of the first 45 minutes, Buffalo State found itself tied 0-0 heading into half-time.
  • Smith struck first for the Bengals in the 50th minute, heading home a header-pass from Jada Sargeant(Camillus/Marcellus) to make it 1-0.  The play was set up by a flip-throw in from Alexis Carillo (Pine Bush/Pine Bush).  Carillo's throw was deflected by Sargeant to Smith and the senior forward found the back of the net.
  • Just four minutes later, Smith struck again, putting home a perfect cross from Catherine Mammoser(Lackawanna/Eden) to make it 2-0, Buffalo State.
  • Lindsay Mahoney (Port Jefferson/St. John the Baptist) put the final nail in the coffin of Fredonia in the 73rdminute with her first goal of the season, knocking in a header off a Breanna Knight (Valley Stream/Valley Stream South) cross to make it 3-0.
  • Taylor Carillo (Pine Bush/Pine Bush) made three saves to record her fifth shutout of the season, and fourth blank sheet in a row.  Her shutout streak now stands at 439 minutes and 55 seconds.

FOR THE FOES
  • Kendall Owczarzak made 10 saves in the losing effort.

NOTEWORTHY
  • Buffalo States starts 3-0 in SUNYAC play for the second-straight season.  The Bengals did not drop a regular-season conference match at all last year, going 8-0-1, en route to a SUNYAC Championship appearance.
  • It is the first time since 2006 that a Buffalo State goalkeeper has recorded four shutouts in a row.
  • Coming into the game, Smith was tied for second in the NCAA in game-winning goals.  She now has five on the season.
  • Buffalo State and Fredonia are tied with one win apiece in its yearly Battle by the Lake competition, after a late Fredonia goal downed men's soccer, 3-2 earlier in the afternoon.
