Men’s Hockey upends No. 4 Geneseo, 4-1

GENESEO, N.Y.— Zach Nieminen (Ajax, ON/Notre Dame CSS) scored twice and Mike DeLaVergne (Pawling, NY/Pawling) made 27 saves as host Buffalo State upset nationally No. 4-ranked Geneseo, 4-1, tonight in a SUNYAC contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Anthony Passero (Fort Erie, ON/Lakeshore) added a goal and an assist, and Hugo Petit (Chelsea, QC/CIH Acad.) also scored for the Bengals.
  • Taylor Pryce (Newmarket, ON/Cardinal Carter) and Zach Remers (Clarence, NY/Canisius) registered a pair of assists each in the win.
  • Passero opened the scoring with a power-play marker in less than eight minutes into the game off a feed from Remers.
  • The Bengals pushed the lead to 2-0 with a shorthanded marker later in the frame when Pryce and Nieminen converted a 2-on-0 breakaway into Nieminen's fifth goal of the season.
  • Geneseo started to take control in the second period, but DeLaVergne kept the Knights in check, including thwarting a 2-on-0 breakaway during an ill-timed line change by the Bengals.
  • Geneseo did manage to get on the scoreboard with a power-play goal minutes later, but he Knights would not solve DeLaVergne again the rest of the way.
  • Buffalo State withstood some early pressure in the third period, before Nieminen netted his second of the game and sixth of the year off a Pryce rebound, reclaiming the two goal lead with less than eight minutes left in regulation.
  • Petit put the game out of reach just 50 seconds later with his second of the season from Passero and Remers.
  • The Knights held a 28-21 advantage in shots, including 22-11 over the final 40 minutes.
  • Both teams were 1 for 4 on the power play.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Freshman Conlon Keenan scored his 11th goal of the season for Geneseo.
  • Devin McDonald made 17 saves in the loss.
