Men’s Basketball to Visit Brockport for SUNYAC Quarterfinal on Tuesday

Lovell Smith and the Bengals will face Brockport on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Buffalo State's men's basketball team won its final two games of the regular season this past weekend to secure the final SUNYAC playoff berth and will travel as the No. 6 seed to face No. 3 Brockport on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

The Bengals were on the outside looking in entering the final weekend of the regular season, but soundly defeated New Paltz on Friday to set up a showdown on Saturday against Oneonta with the winner advancing to the postseason.  The Red Dragons could not keep up with the Bengals who owned a 30-2 scoring advantage on the fast break en route to a 96-86 victory.

Buffalo State is the highest scoring team in the SUNYAC, averaging 85.4 points-per-game.  Junior Lovell Smith (Buffalo/McKinley) averaged 31.0 points-per-game in the final two wins and leads the team with 16.6 points-per-game for the season.  Sophomore Michael Henry (Syracuse/W. Genesee) averages 15.1 points and 8.5 rebounds, and junior guard Nico McLean (Buffalo/Amherst) has added 14.6 points, 7.0 rebounds and a team-high 104 assists.

Buffalo State finished the regular season 15-10 overall and 9-9 in SUNYAC play.  Brockport finished in a three-way tie for third and earned the No. 3 seed by winning the tie breakers.  The Golden Eagles are 16-9 overall and 11-7 in league play and went 8-3 in their final 11 games.

The Bengals are making their second-consecutive SUNYAC playoff appearance.  Buffalo State has traveled to Brockport for the first round of the playoffs in each of its last two postseason appearances, falling 78-73 last year and 89-83 in 2012.

The two teams split the regular season series with each team winning on the opposition's home court. The Bengals earned an 81-73 win in Brockport on Jan. 5, but the Golden Eagles won in Buffalo, 89-78, on Jan. 15.

The winner will advance to face No. 2 Cortland at top-seeded Plattsburgh in the semifinals on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
