Three-goal third period propels Women’s Hockey to 3-1 win at Potsdam

POTSDAM, N.Y.—  Erin Gehen (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) scored twice and Caitie Horvatits (Elma, NY/Iroquois) tallied a short-handed goal and an assist all in the third period as Buffalo State escaped with a 3-1 victory over Potsdam in tonight's NEWHL contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Rachel Lenard (Orchard Park, NY/Nardin), Megan Reukauf (Depew, NY/Lancaster) and Brooke Krantz (Penticton, BC/Penticton) each added an assist in the game.
  • Buffalo State found itself on two power-plays early in the first period but could not break through as the scored stayed 0-0 for much of the first period.
  • Potsdam found the back of the net first with just 1:35 left in the period to push the lead to 1-0 after 20 minutes of play.
  • The Bengals outshot the Bears 9-6 in the second frame and killed two penalties in the period to keep the lead 1-0 at second intermission.
  • Buffalo State tied the game as Gehen scored her 51st career goal with 8:30 left to play in the game. Horvatits and Krantz each picked up assists on the goal.
  • Less than five minutes later, the Bengals found themselves on the wrong end of a power-play but managed to retake the lead off a short-handed goal by Horvatits.
  • Buffalo State finished off its scoring with an empty net goal by Gehen with less than a minute left to claim the win. Lenard and Reukauf added assists on the play
  • Justine Silva (El Monte, CA/Arroyo) claimed the victory in net for Bengals with 27 saves.
  • Buffalo State outshot the Bears 30-28 for the game.
 
FOR THE FOES:
  • Jaci Morr scored the lone goal for Potsdam
  • Alexa Pfeiffer recorded 27 saves in net for the Bears.

Buffalo State and Potsdam will face off in the North Country again tomorrow at 2 p.m.
