Women’s Hockey blanks Oswego, 2-0

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Justine Silva (El Monte, CA/Arroyo) pushed aside all 29 shots she faced to record her tenth career shutout as Buffalo State earned a 2-0 win over visiting Oswego in SUNYAC action this afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Brooke Krantz (Penticton, BC/Okanagan Hockey Academy) notched her fourth goal of the season and Rachel Lenard (Orchard Park, NY/SUNY Oswego) recorded her seventh.
  • Oswego outshot the Bengals 10-8 in the first period but could not breakthrough as Silva recorded 10 saves in the first 20 minutes of action.
  • Buffalo State opened up the scoring with 10 minutes remaining in the second when Erin Gehen (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) and Krantz used a give-and-go to push the puck past the Oswego goalie. Kayla Kopinski (Elma, NY/Alden) also recorded an assist on the play.
  • Just over a minute later, the Bengals extended their lead to 2-0 when Lenard received a pass from Bri Carroll (Peoria, AZ/AZ Virtual Academy) and lifted it above the goaltenders gloves. Carroll and Natasha Steinle (Morrison, CO/CIH Academy (ON)) added assists on the goal.
  • Oswego had two power play chances and outshot the Bengals 7-6 in the third period but were unable to stage a comeback.
 
FOR THE FOES:
  • Mariah Madrigal picked up the loss in net for the Lakers, recording 24 saves on the day.

NOTEWORTHY:
  • With the victory, Buffalo State clinched a berth in the first-ever NEWHL playoffs.
 
UP NEXT:
The Bengals return to the ice on Friday, February 2 as it takes on Cortland in the first game of a two-game weekend series. Puck drop is set for 4 p.m.
