Brooklyn edges Men’s Basketball in Coles finale, 86-83

BUFFALO, N.Y.—  Dom Grayer (Brooklyn/Bishop Loughlin) had a contested look at a 3-pointer, with five second remaining, that rimmed off as Buffalo State's comeback fell short in an 86-83 loss against visiting Brooklyn in the final game of the Coles Classic this afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Grayer led the Bengals' offense with 18 points while adding two blocks and two steals.
  • Kay Grant (Jamaica/Thomas Jefferson) tallied his second double-double in as many days, finishing with 15 points and 15 rebounds.
  • Sheldon Adams (Rochester/Bishop Kearney) chipped in 15 points, three rebounds and a pair of assists.
  • Zak Ciezki (Cheektowaga/Cheektowaga) added 13 points off of the bench on 3 of 7 shooting from the 3-point line.
  • Brooklyn ran out of the gates with an early 7-2 lead but let it slip away as Buffalo State responded by scoring 22 of the next 31 points to take a 24-16 lead at the 12 minute mark of the first half.
  • The Bulldogs reclaimed the lead with a pair of free throws by Michael Tesoriero and continued the momentum to take a 45-39 lead at the halftime break.
  • After Brooklyn captured its biggest lead just 41 seconds into the second stanza, Buffalo State chipped away at the deficit until a 3-pointer by Steven Calvo (Bronx/Riverdale) trimmed the lead to 64-61 at the midway point of the second half.
  • The lead inflated back up to seven on a 3-pointer by Brooklyn with 1:29 left. The Bengals responded with a 3-pointer and a three-point play off a fast break layup from Adams in the span of 51 seconds to cut the lead to 84-82 with 38 seconds left in the contest.
  • After Brooklyn went down and hit a jumper with 17 seconds left, Buffalo State had one final contested look at a tie that fell just short as Brooklyn escaped with the 86-83 victory.
  • The Bulldogs held the Bengals to 39 percent shooting but were outrebounded 41-38.
  • Buffalo State finished 18 of 23 from the charity stripe and held a 22-14 advantage in points off of 15 Brooklyn turnovers.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Anthony McClean and Tesoriero each finished with 17 points to lead the Bulldogs in scoring, while Tesoriero chipped in six assists and six rebounds.
  • Ilir Ndreci chipped in 13 points and 10 rebounds off of the bench.
