Softball drops a pair to UWEC and Plymouth State to open 2018 season

CLERMONT, Fla.—Buffalo State opened its 2018 campaign today kicking off an 11-game stretch in Clermont, Fla., dropping a pair of decisions to Wisconsin-Eau Claire, 11-5, and to Plymouth State, 6-0.
 
GAME #1 BASICS
FINAL SCORE:  UW-Eau Claire – 11, Buffalo State - 5

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Abijah Adams (Rochester/Greece-Arcadia) and Hannah Dunlap (Batavia/Oakfield-Alabama) paced the Bengals' offense. Adams was 2 for 3 with an RBI, while Dunlap finished 2 for 4, also with an RBI.
  • Julia Blujus (Amherst/Sacred Heart) also had a hit and a run driven in, while Danielle Szymkowiak (Cheektowaga/Cheektowaga) had an RBI and two runs scored.
  • Dunlap worked 5 2/3 innings in the circle in relief, scattering nine hits while allowing three runs.  Marissa Hayes (N. Tonawanda/Niagara-Wheatfield) lasted 1 1/3 innings in her first start at Buffalo State, surrendering eight runs on nine hits.
  • Both teams traded runs in the first inning, but the Blugolds took command with a seven-run second inning that included six-consecutive hits capped by back-to-back home runs.
  • UWEC pushed the lead to 10-2 in the top of the sixth, but Buffalo State responded with three runs on four hits, including RBI singles by Adams and Blujus to cut the deficit to 10-5.
  • UWEC completed the scoring with a run in the seventh.  Buffalo State loaded the bases with two outs on two hit by pitches and a walk in the seventh inning, but could not mount a late rally.
  • Buffalo State finished the game with seven hits, compared to 18 by UWEC.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Carlie Christensen was 3 for 5 with a home run and three RBIs for UWEC.
  • Katelyn Yute was 3 for 4 with a double, a triple, two RBIs and three runs scored.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Cassie O'Hern (Augusta, NJ/High Point) was 2 for 2 for Buffalo State, accounting for half of the Bengals' four hits in the loss.
  • Nicole Adams (Lockport/Starpoint) was saddled with the loss, allowing three runs on four hits and five walks with six strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.
  • Plymouth got on the board with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning and added a run in the fourth.
  • Buffalo State put runners on second and third in the fifth inning, but could not plate a run.
  • The Bengals' defense escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the fifth inning, and Buffalo State threatened with runners on second and third again in the sixth, but were denied.
  • Plymouth pulled away with three runs on three hits in the sixth inning to complete the scoring.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Ashley Deyo was 2 for 3 with a two-run home run.
  • Allison Moylan and Caitlyn Miller combined for the shutout with Moylan working 5 1/3 and allowing four hits for the win.
 
UP NEXT
Buffalo State will continue its spring trip tomorrow with two more games against St. Lawrence at 11:30 a.m. and Worcester State at 2 p.m.
