Softball splits pair at New Paltz

NEW PALTZ, N.Y.— Marissa Hayes (N. Tonawanda/Niagara-Wheatfield) pitched 12 1/3 scoreless innings to help Buffalo State earn a split in a SUNYAC doubleheader at New Paltz today, winning the first game 2-0 before falling 4-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Hayes was in control in the circle for Buffalo State, earning her first collegiate shutout in a complete-game five-hitter with two strikeouts and no walks.
  • Danielle Szymkowiak (Cheektowaga/Cheektowaga) was 2 for 3 with a home run and scored both Bengal runs.
  • Julia Blujus (Amherst/Sacred Heart) was 2 for 4 at the plate.
  • Buffalo State opened the scoring in the first inning with a bases loaded fielder's choice by Cassie O'Hern (Augusta, NJ/High Point) the pushed Szymkowiak home.
  • Szymkowiak then blasted a homer in the seventh inning to provide and insurance run, and Hayes stranded a one-out base runner to close out the victory.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Lauren Cappello gave up eight hits to go with five strikeouts in the loss for the Hawks.
  • Taylor Leonette finished 2 for 3 at the plate.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Blujus led Buffalo State at the plate, collecting two of the teams three hits.
  • Nicole Adams (Lockport/Starpoint) started the game and allowed four unearned runs on two hits and a walk in just 2/3 of an inning.
  • Hayes went the rest of the way in the circle, surrendering just one hit.
  • The Bengals committed three errors in the first inning and allowed all four New Paltz runs.  The first two runs came home on errors, and then the Hawks hit a two-run home run.
  • Buffalo State only allowed a single base runner in the sixth inning for the rest of the game.
  • The Bengals run came in the sixth inning as Szymkowiak singled and later scored on a wild pitch.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Julia Perhacs homered for New Paltz, and Alyssa Pfitscher tossed a three-hitter for the win.
 
UP NEXT
Buffalo State is scheduled to play a non-conference doubleheader at RIT on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
