Women’s Basketball opens New Year with win at D’Youville, 74-69

BUFFALO, N.Y.— Liv LeBaron (Corning/Corning East) did not show any signs of rust after the holiday layoff, netting 31 points to go with 13 rebounds to lead Buffalo State to a 74-69 victory over host D'Youville in a non-conference game this afternoon at College Center Gym.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • LeBaron shot 12 of 23 from the floor, including 4 of 7 from 3-point range and added five assists and three steals.
  • Katie Villarini (Hamburg/Hamburg) played all 40 minutes, scoring 14 points with seven rebounds and six assists.
  • Princella McCullough (Rochester/Bishop Kearney) recorded a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
  • Neither team ever led by more than six points in a back-and-forth contest that featured 18 lead changes and was tied 11 times.
  • Buffalo State used a fast start to a 14-8 advantage early in the first quarter, but D'Youville responded with six-straight points to even the score at 14-14.
  • The Bengals pushed the advantage back to six after a LeBaron 3-pointer put the score at 33-27 late in the second quarter and led 34-31 at halftime.
  • D'Youville scored the final five points of the third quarter to take its largest lead of the afternoon into the final frame up 55-50.
  • Buffalo State used a 7-0 run early in the fourth quarter to reclaim the lead, but the Spartans continued to hang around. 
  • D'Youville held its final lead at 69-68 before Jenna Faulkner (Lockport/Starpoint) hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:01 remaining, and the Bengals were able to seal the win despite hitting just 3 of 6 free throws down the stretch.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Monica June led five Spartans scoring in double-figures with 22 points.
  • Darian Evans chipped in 10 points and grabbed 16 rebounds.
