Buffalo State is preparing for the SUNYAC playoffs for the fifth-consecutive season, entering the tournament as the No. 3 seed slated to host No. 6 Brockport for a quarterfinal matchup on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The Bengals have matched the program's second-highest single-season win total, reaching double-digit victories for the fifth-straight season, as they enter the postseason 14-3 overall and a 6-3 mark in SUNYAC play, just one win shy of the school record set in 1982.
Brockport is 9-7-2 overall and 4-4-1, needing a 2-1 victory over Geneseo last Saturday to earn a spot in the conference tournament. Buffalo State used a pair of goals from senior
Ali Shawish (Lackawanna/Lackawanna) to surge past the Golden Eagles in their only meeting this season on Oct. 11.
Buffalo State's high-powered offense, which leads the SUNYAC with 52 goals in 17 games played, is led by sophomore
Theo Pencic (Oslo, Norway) who is second in the conference with 14 goals and 35 points. Sophomore
Zak Shaibi (Buffalo/McKinley) has scored 10 goal for 24 points, while Shawish has eight goals for 20 points.
Senior goalkeeper
Andreas Queen (Stone Ridge/Rondout Valley) has tallied a SUNYAC-leading nine shutouts this season and is third in goals-against-average (0.67) and tied for fourth in save percentage (.810).
The Bengals' defense, led by
Colin O'Keefe (Buffalo/Canisius),
Abdi Salim (Nairobi, Kenya/Hutch Tech),
Jason Lee (Middle Village/Xavier) and
Trevor Moreland (Newfane/Newfane), is second in the SUNYAC with only allowing 13 goals in 17 games this season.
Buffalo State is seeking its third SUNYAC Championship and first since 1970. The No. 5-seeded Bengals fell to fourth-seeded Oneonta in the quarterfinals last season. The Bengals' last postseason victory came in the form of a 2-0 win over No. 5 New Paltz in 2016.
The winner will travel to second-seeded Plattsburgh for the semifinals on Wed., Nov. 6 at 1 p.m.
