GAME #2 BASICS
FINAL SCORE:  Oneonta – 5, Buffalo State – 4 (9 innings)
LOCATION: Softball Field - Buffalo, N.Y.
RECORDS: Oneonta (15-18/10-6), Buffalo State (17-17/6-10)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Oneonta outhit Buffalo State 13-3, but needed nine innings to pull out the victory in the late game.
  • Blujus had a single and a pair of RBIs, and Dunlap and Taylor Benton (Niagara Falls/Niagara Wheatfield) each doubled to account for all of the Bengals' hits.
  • Oneonta scored on a sac fly in the first inning and then pushed the lead to 3-0 in the second innings, scoring a pair of runs on a throwing error.
  • After the Red Dragons pushed the lead to 4-0 in the top of the fourth, the Bengals evened the score in the bottom of the frame, three walks, a hit by pitch, an error and a two-run single by Blujus.
  • The score remained tied entering the bottom of the seventh, when Oriana Castello (Pearl River/Nanuet) reached on an error to start the inning.
  • She then took two bases on a sacrifice bunt to put the winning run 60 feet from home.
  • Castello attempted to tag up on a shallow fly ball to left field, but was doubled up at the plate.  Bengals' head coach Jamie Brown argued the catcher blocked the plate on both knees, but the umpires stuck with the original call leading the to the eventual ejection of the Buffalo State coach.
  • More controversy ensued on the winning run in the top of the ninth when the Red Dragons scored on a sacrifice fly on a diving catch by Justine Silva (Baldwin Park, CA/Arroyo) in shallow right field.  Buffalo State contented the runner left third base early not anticipating the catch, but the appeal was denied and the Bengals were retired in order in the bottom of the inning to seal the win.
  • Emma Richard (Grand Island/Grand Island) took the loss, allowing five unearned runs with seven strikeouts.
