Softball walks off with sweep against Brockport

BUFFALO, N.Y.—Buffalo State scored late to defeat Brockport 8-7 in the opening game and then rallied from a 4-0 deficit to claim a 5-4 walk-off win and complete the sweep in the second half of today's home SUNYAC doubleheader.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • An RBI double by Cassie O'Hern (Augusta, NJ/High Point) in the sixth inning proved to be the difference after Brockport had rallied to erase a 7-1 deficit.
  • O'Hern finished 2 for 4 with a pair of RBIs.
  • Sydney McIntosh (Buffalo/Kenmore West) was 4 for 4 with two doubles and two runs scored.
  • Taylor Benton (Niagara Falls/Niagara Wheatfield) was 2 for 3 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored, and Julia Blujus (Amherst/Sacred Heart) was 2 for 4 with a double and a run.
  • Buffalo State finished with 12 hits, including six doubles and a triple.
  • Marissa Hayes (N. Tonawanda/Niagara Wheatfield) was credited with the win, pitching 1 1/3 innings of relief allowing two runs on three hits.
  • Emma Richard (Grand Island/Grand Island) started the game, but earned the save after returning with a one-run lead in the seventh and retired the Golden Eagles in order.  She pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing nine hits and five runs.
  • The Bengals led 2-1 after the first inning and extended the lead with five runs on four hits and two errors in the third.
  • Brockport battled back with four runs on four hits in the fifth and then tied the game at 7-7 with two runs on three hits in the sixth.

  • Meghan Cullen went 4 for 4 with two RBIs to lead Brockport.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was Buffalo State's turn to play from behind in the second game as Brockport jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning.
  • The Bengals battled back however, and won the game on a walk-off two-run single up the middle by Chelsea Davis (Lancaster/Lancaster).
  • Blujus was the only Bengal with multiple hits going 2 for 4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored.
  • Oriana Castello (Pearl River/Nanuet) earned the win, striking out three and allowing just two earned runs and six hits, including just two over the final six innings.
  • Buffalo State scored twice in the third to cut the deficit to 4-2, capitalizing on a hit, a walk and a Brockport error.
  • The Bengals added another run on an RBI single by Hannah Dunlap (Batavia/Oakfield-Alabama) in the sixth.
  • Blujus hit a one-out single to start the seventh-inning rally.  Castello singled and then both runners moved into scoring position before Davis's shot up the middle plated the game's final two runs.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Alexis Ross was 2 for 4 with a run scored for Brockport.
  • Megan Van Dorn suffered the loss, allowing seven hits and three earned runs with three strikeouts.
 
UP NEXT
Buffalo State will host RIT in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday starting at 3 p.m.
