Women’s Hockey suffers OT heartbreak against SUNY Canton, 2-1

CANTON, N.Y.— Natasha Steinle (Morrison, CO/Canadian International Hockey Academy) scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season, but it wasn't enough as SUNY Canton scored just over a minute into the overtime session en route to a 2-1 win in NEWHL action this afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Buffalo State outshot the Kangaroos 11-4 in the first period but failed to break through as the score stayed at 0-0 at the first intermission.
  • Canton opened the scoring just over a minute into the second period.
  • The Bengals responded by capitalizing on the power-play opportunity as Steinle scored on assists by Kiara Haynes (Littleton, CO/Dakota Ridge) and Jessica Carter (Scottsdale, AZ/Brightmont Academy).
  • The Roos outshot the Bengals 10-7 in the third frame as Bri Gawonski (Dunkirk/Mt. Mercy) made timely saves to send the game into the extra session.  
  • Buffalo State had three shots in the opening minute of overtime, but the goal by Canton proved to be the difference.
  • Gawronski finished with 22 saves in net for the Bengals.
  • The Bengals finished with a 27-24 edge in shots on goal.
  • Buffalo State finished 1 of 4 on the power play, while holding the Roos to 0 of 3 with an extra skater.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Versity Lewis and Sarah Kosnaskie scored for Canton.
  • Kayla Lauzon finished with a game-high 26 saves in net for the Roos.
