Men’s basketball stumbles in home matchup vs. Brockport, 99-73

BUFFALO, NY – Brockport utilized a strong second-half run to pull away from the Buffalo State men's basketball team, as it dropped a SUNYAC contest to the defending league champions by a 99-73 score Friday night.

INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORE
  • Matt Parkinson (Springfield Gardens, NY/John Browne) saw major minutes for the first time this season and played well, leading the Bengals with 12 points in 21 minutes off the bench, adding two steals and two blocked shots.
  • Daron Hughey (Hartford, CT/The Masters School) and Aaron Davis (Beacon, NY/Beacon) each added 11 points and three rebounds.
  • Sheldon Adams (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) and Marquell Boutwell (Liverpool, NY/Nottingham) added 10 points each, with Boutwell recording a double-double with 10 rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Brockport scored on two of its first three possessions to take a 4-0 lead, but five straight Hughey points gave the Bengals an 8-7 lead.
  • With the game tied at 17 at the 11:02 mark, Brockport went on an 11-2 run in a span of 2:10 to take a nine-point, 28-19 lead.
  • Brockport went on another run later in the half, stretching its lead to 12 points (41-29) with 3:46 to go.
  • 'State attempted to rally, as a Brendyn Cheng (Wantagh, NY/Commack) steal led to a Parkinson 3-pointer, sparking a 7-0 run as a Robert Richards (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) put-back brought the Bengals to within five, at 41-36.
  • With seconds to go before halftime, Mekhi Beckett converted on a 3-pointer from the wing, as the Golden Eagles led by eight, 46-38 at the half.
  • It was all Brockport in the second half, as the Golden Eagles began the stanza with an 8-2 run, taking a 14-point lead.
  • A pair of baskets by Parkinson and Boutwell brought the deficit to 10 (54-44).
  • It would be as close as the Bengals could get from there, as a 26-13 advantage over an eight-minute stretch brought the Brockport advantage to 23 points (80-57).
  • Brockport would lead by as many as 28 points in garbage time, before a few made Buffalo State baskets saw the final margin settle at 26.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Jahidi Wallace was a force on the glass, leading all participants with 21 points and 14 rebounds.
  • David Grady added 18 points and six rebounds.
  • Beckett added 12 points and three assists.
  • Brockport shot 49.3 percent (37-of-75) from the field in the win, out-rebounding Buffalo State by a 55-41 margin.
