BUFFALO, N.Y.— The Buffalo State women's basketball team couldn't recover from a strong third-quarter effort by Geneseo, as the Bengals dropped a SUNYAC matchup to the visiting Knights by a 62-54 score Saturday afternoon.

- Katie Villarini (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) led the Bengal scorers with a 16-point, 10-rebound double-double, adding seven assists.
- Brianna Smith (Oakfield, NY/Oakfield) added 12 points, hitting four shots from beyond the arc.
- Tashawni Cornfield (Gowanda, NY/Putham) and Zavia Jaime (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) each chipped in eight points. Jaime added six assists.
- Taylor James (Buffalo, NY/Frederik Law Olmstead) made her first career start, adding four rebounds and two blocked shots.
- The Bengals shot 30.5 percent (18-of-59) from the field, but shot a season-best 33 percent (9-of-27) from beyond the arc.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bengals struck early with a 7-0 run after Geneseo's opening 3-pointer.
- A 3-pointer by Cornfield at the 2:53 mark gave the Bengals what ended up being their largest lead of the game at five (10-5).
- Geneseo scored six unanswered points in the final 1:42, taking a 14-12 lead into the second quarter.
- The Knights extended their first-half lead to as many as six points after a Kiley Snow 3-pointer gave the visitors a 24-18 lead.
- Grace Carey (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) then hit a 3-pointer, igniting an 8-0 Bengal run to take the lead, at 26-24.
- The Knights once again closed the period strong, as Lauren Romino scored four points, including a buzzer-beating layup, taking a 28-26 lead into halftime.
- Down five early in the third quarter, the Bengals worked to tie the game, as a Heaven Rollek (Springville, NY/Springville-Griffith) steal led to a Cornfield transition bucket, tying the game at 33.
- Geneseo slowly pulled away from there, finishing the period with a 15-6 advantage to take a 48-39 lead into the final quarter.
- The Knights extended their lead to double-digits in the fourth quarter, leading by as many as 14 points (60-46) at the 2:20 mark.
- Villarini brought the Bengal deficit to under double digits with five consecutive points, but it was too little, too late as the Knights eventually hung on to the eight-point victory.
FOR THE FOES
- Romito led all scorers with 17 points, adding 12 rebounds.
- Mackenzie Reigle added 11 points, six rebounds, and six assists.
- Hannah Stockman also added 11 points, while Snow chipped in 10.

- Villarini finished the weekend with 1,102 career points, moving her into ninth all-time in Buffalo State history.
