Softball clinches playoff berth with split at Geneseo

GENESEO, N.Y.—Buffalo State edged Geneseo 2-1 in today's opening game to secure a playoff berth before dropping the late contest, 2-0. 
 
GAME 1 BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Buffalo State – 2, Geneseo - 1

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Freshman Makena Adams (Randolph/Frewsburg) registered a season-high six strikeouts and scattered seven hits in the complete-game 2-1 victory in the opening game.
  • An RBI single by Sydney McIntosh (Buffalo/Kenmore West) in the first inning and another RBI single by Taylor Benton (Niagara Falls/Niagara Wheatfield) in the fourth inning proved to be all the offense the Bengals would need.
  • Geneseo scored one run in the fifth and then had a pair of singles in the seventh, but stranded the pair of runners to end the game.
  • Caitlyn Parsons (Webster/Webster Thomas) was the only Bengal with multiple hits, finishing 2 for 3.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Nicole Schwartz surrendered just seven hits in the hard-luck loss for Geneseo.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Buffalo State only mustered a single hit in the late game and a two-run home run in the first inning proved to be the difference.
  • Olivia Carr (West Falls/East Aurora) started in the circle for the Bengals, allowing two runs on two hits and three walks in 1 1/3 innings.  Carli Bogue (Elba/Elba) pitched the final 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just two hits.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Audrey Minton hit the two-run home run for the Knights, and Lauren Kersch went the distance in the circle, allowing one hit with four strikeouts and no walks.
 
UP NEXT
Buffalo State will play in the best-of-three SUNYAC Semifinals on Saturday. Depending on the results of tomorrow's Geneseo/Brockport doubleheader, the Bengals will either be the No. 1 seed in the West and will host East No. 2 Oneonta, or they will be No. 2 in the West and will play at East No. 1 Cortland.
