Women's Soccer drops 3-1 decision to Alfred

Erin Valente scored the lone goal for the Bengals

BUFFALO, N.Y.— Senior midfielder Erin Valente (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) scored her second goal of the season, leading the way as the Buffalo State women's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to Alfred, in non-league action from Coyer Field on a rainy Wednesday night.

INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORE
  • Valente scored Buffalo State's lone goal and led the team with four shots, three on target.
  • Sophomore forward Macey Gioeli (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) assisted on Valente's goal and finished with two shots, one on goal.
  • Junior goalkeeper Bella Vene (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) made a season-high 10 saves in the effort.
  • The Bengals fall to 1-3-1 all-time against the Saxons.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Alfred struck first in the 13th minute off a corner kick opportunity. Jacey Palmgreen found Nyah Solly in the scrum in front of net, the ball caroming off her chest and into net.
  • Kayla Silverstein struck twice for the Saxons in the 44th and 71st minute, both off breakaways.
  • Buffalo State turned up the pressure offensively in the second half, tallying six shots, four on target, in the period.
  • The Bengals broke through in the 78th minute, as Gioeli raced up the right sideline, cut inside, and found Valente with a short pass. Valente calmly tapped the ball low past Alfred goalkeeper Hannah Fuller to her right.
  • Valente almost doubled it up with a strike from about 25 yards out in the 83rd minute, but the ball just went over the goalpost and out of play.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Silverstein scored twice to lead the Saxons off the bench, tallying four shots.
  • Solly tallied her second career goal to open the scoring.
  • Fuller made four saves to earn the victory in net.
  • The Saxons outshot the Bengals by a 24-7 margin.
 
UP NEXT
The Bengals will hit the road to begin SUNYAC play, visiting rival Fredonia in the 2021 edition of the 'Battle by the Lake' on Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m.
