Women's Basketball Beats Plattsburgh 65-62

PLATTSBURGH, NY — The Buffalo State women's basketball team pushed its winning streak to three games, pulling out a 65-62 victory at Plattsburgh on Saturday afternoon.

  • Katie Villarini (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) led all scorers with 23 points, and added 10 rebounds and six assists.
  • Tashawni Cornfield (Gowanda, NY/Putham) added nine points and grabbed eight rebounds.
  • Adiya Jones (Washington, DC/McKinley Technology) and Grace Carey (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) each scored seven points for Buffalo State.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Plattsburgh raced out to a 9-2 just two minutes into the opening quarter.
  • Buffalo State fought clawed its way back, and a Jadyn Jones basket brought the deficit to 17-16 at the end of the quarter.
  • The Bengals' defense clamped down in the second quarter, allowing the Cardinals to score just three points as Buffalo State closed the half on a 10-0 run to take a 29-20 halftime lead.
  • The teams traded baskets in the opening minutes of the second half, and a 3-pointer by Carey gave the Bengals their largest lead of the game at 43-32.
  • After the Cardinals closed to within four, Villarini knocked down a jumper with two seconds left to give the Bengals a 47-41 lead after three quarters.
  • Plattsburgh rallied to begin the fourth quarter, tying the game twice at 52-52 and 54-54.
  • Buffalo State used an 8-3 run to take a five-point lead, but Plattsburgh's Kayla Doody drained a 3-pointer to make it 62-60 with 17 seconds left.
  • The Bengals were able to hold on in the final seconds for the 65-62 victory.
FOR THE FOES
  • Hope Sullivan had a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double, while Doody added 12 points for the Cardinals.
