Villarini Dominates as Women's Basketball Rolls to 73-59 Victory over Fredonia

FREDONIA, NY —  Katie Villarini (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) outscored the entire Fredonia team in the opening frame, and the Buffalo State women's basketball team cruised to an emphatic 73-59 victory on Friday evening over the host Blue Devils.

INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORE

·      Villarini scored 36 points, tied for a career-best, and also grabbed 10 rebounds in the victory. She shot 13-17 from the field, including 5-9 from 3-point range. 

·      Tashawni Cornfield (Gowanda, NY/Putham) tallied 18 points and seven rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED

·      The Bengals came out firing in the first quarter, racing out to a 34-12 lead after one.

·      The 34 points was the most points in the opening quarter of a game this season for Buffalo State.

·      Villarini paced Buffalo State with 17 points in the quarter, including the final eight Bengals' points.

·      A Taylor James (Buffalo, NY/Frederick Law Olmstead) jumper early in the second quarter pushed the Buffalo State lead to 44-18, the largest lead of the game.

·      The Blue Devils ended the half on a 13-6 run, but the Bengals maintained a 50-31 lead at halftime.

·      Fredonia cut the Buffalo State lead to 14 early in the third quarter, before the Bengals once again pushed their lead to 20 thanks to a Cornfield 3-pointer.  

·      Villarini stayed hot in the third, adding 10 more points in the third as the Bengals led 66-40 after three quarters.

·      Fredonia outscored Buffalo State 19-7 in the fourth quarter, but the outcome had already been determined by that point.

FOR THE FOES

·      Isabella Wier scored a team-high 10 points, while Maddy Miske drained three triples for the Blue Devils.
